Why I built Amwalio
A note from the person behind it
Amwalio started as a spreadsheet. My own one.
I built it because I wanted a straight answer to a simple question: if nothing changes, what will our money look like in six months? Not a category pie chart of what we spent last month — a plain, month-by-month view of what comes in, what goes out, and what is actually left.
It worked, so I kept using it
Every month I would open it, put in what was coming in and what was going out, and look down the column. Seeing the months laid out in a row changes how decisions feel. A cost that sounds small stops being small when you can see it repeated twelve times. A quiet month tells you when to plan the bigger things, and when not to.
The useful part was never clever maths. It was having everything in one place, in front of me, with nothing hidden.
Why I am giving it away
Talking to other families, I kept hearing the same two things: budgeting apps want to connect to your bank before they will tell you anything, and none of them fit how a Muslim family actually plans — money set aside for family, giving, zakat, saving for something specific without borrowing for it.
So I turned my sheet into this tool, and filled in the gaps it had. Amwalio is free, it needs no account, and it asks for no bank connection. It is a planner, not an adviser: it adds up the numbers you give it and shows you what they mean. It will never sell you a product, take a commission, or recommend anything that charges interest.
Your numbers stay yours
Everything you type stays in your own browser, on your own device. It is not sent to us, and we could not look at it if we wanted to. That is not a feature we added — it is the whole design. You can read exactly what that means in the privacy notice.
It is early, and I would like your help
This is the first version, and it is deliberately small. Saving your plan to an account is coming, and more help around zakat and bigger purchases after that. If something is confusing, missing, or plain wrong, I would genuinely like to know: hello@amwalio.app.
